Employee Management

If you want your restaurant to be a successful business, you need to develop some good techniques to manage your staff. By doing so, you will be providing them with a pleasant working atmosphere, which will lessen employee turnover.

Let all of your staff know that this is a service industry that exists to please its customers and that they all need to be pleasant, professional and ever mindful that they are there to serve.

Create a Team Spirit by making them feel they are important to your business and be sure to give them encouragement and praise as they improve.

Make sure they have the supplies and equipment they need to be productive. Faulty equipment is demoralizing and lessens productivity.

Pay them well. If employees are paid well and have some benefits, they are less likely to look for another job and will be more loyal to your business. When you have less turnover, you staff is is more efficient.

Create an employee handbook and job description. This should include a company policy, dress code, how to get a raise, cleanliness, etc. When you hire, you should have a clear idea of how you want your staff to act, look and even think and you need to be able to communicate this to them. If your staff has a vague understanding of what their responsibilities are, you will always be disappointed with their work.

There are lots of web sites offering software to create an employee handbook. Foodsoftware.com has very affordable software ( $59.95 ) The word processing files are in both MS Word (.doc) and text (.txt) formats so they may be used with any word processor in Windows or on Macs.
